French glamour with Montenegrian tradition Francuski glamur uz Crnogorsku tradiciju
What does it look like when two different cultures, styles, and life views merge through the world of fashion? In the encounter of France, an outstanding symbol of charm, elegance and high fashion, and the traditional and folklorish Balkans, an outstanding photo editorial was created that still attracts fashion enthusiasts around the world. One of the most prestigious fashion magazines Elle, known for its avant-garde fashion experiments, dared to show something unseen and unimaginable. And that’s more than 60 years ago!
Fashion is a sphere that has always erased borders, challenged, provoked, connected the future and the past. Everything that art should and can do … To put it simply – to encourage us to break out of stereotypes and inspire us to find different versions of ourselves. Fashion is there to make our lives more playful.
That was the idea behind an unusual editorial by Elle that was shot in Montenegro in 1955. The picture we present to you today shows an elegant Frenchwoman Francoise Dambier photographed in a typical Mediterranean ambiance in the company of a striking Montenegrin in traditional costume. This black and white photo exudes the unobtrusive charm of a bygone period. The famous French model was working for the Dior fashion house at the time, and in the photo, she is wearing an elegant sleeveless dress from the Perlene brand. She is gently staring at a strong Montenegrin whose fascination with the girl’s beauty can be read in his modest smile. It may be hidden among the mustaches, but it is still present. She is there in passing, on vacation, fresh and smiling … He is a man from the mountains, brave and fearless, enchanted by her European elegance. Two worlds connected in one fashion photo. On je čovek sa planina, hrabar i neustrašiv, opčaran njenom evropskom elegancijom. Dva sveta spojena u jednoj modnoj fotki.
Young Francoise was married to photographer Georg Dambier, who also painted in Montenegro. This famous fashion photographer became famous with photos of the most beautiful women of his time, including Bridget Bardot, Marie Helen Arnod, Dorian Leigh, and others. He was known for being among the first to photograph women outside the studio, in unusual locations, on the move, with emotion on their faces. His models laughed, enjoyed exotic locations such as Marrakech, Montenegro, Sicily, Corsica … He often photographed them on ships and in cars. He wanted to portray a free, courageous, adventurous woman. Until then, women in the fashion world were shown in sterile studio conditions, without emotions and attitude – less. George has stepped out of that pattern and portrayed a woman enjoying the world around her. At the same time, she is gentle and strong, always of impeccable appearance, dressed in striking fashion pieces. The famous photo taken in Montenegro does not lag in that. Georg Fambier’s completely progressive, different, photographic manuscript managed to capture all the female glamor and chic of the ’50s.
